Description
TOUR ITINERARY
Duration 7-8 Hours | Difficulty Level : Easy
Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Kuching, followed by a scenic 40-minute drive through the lush countryside toward Semenggoh Nature Reserve. As the city gradually gives way to tropical greenery, get ready to explore one of Sarawak’s most fascinating wildlife destinations.
Step into the enchanting world of Borneo’s rainforest at Semenggoh Nature Reserve, a renowned rehabilitation centre dedicated to helping rescued and orphaned Orangutans return to life in the wild. During the scheduled feeding session, keep your eyes on the forest canopy as you wait for the incredible sight of semi-wild orangutans swinging through the branches or making their way toward the feeding platform.
Watch these intelligent great apes as they move effortlessly through their natural surroundings, displaying their remarkable strength, curiosity and agility. Your guide will introduce you to their behaviour, conservation challenges and the vital work being done to protect Borneo’s endangered wildlife. With more than 20 orangutans living within the reserve, every visit offers a different experience. However, as these animals roam freely in the forest, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Leaving the rainforest behind, continue your journey toward the coastal wilderness of Santubong. Enjoy the changing scenery as you travel through peaceful villages and verdant landscapes, offering a glimpse of everyday life in Sarawak. Make a stop at a local restaurant to recharge before the next adventure, where the rainforest gives way to winding waterways, tidal estuaries and the mysterious world of mangroves.
Take a break and enjoy a meal at a local restaurant along the way to Santubong. Savour the flavours of local cuisine before preparing for an exciting wildlife expedition through one of Sarawak’s most remarkable coastal ecosystems. Arrive at Orcaella by AJ BORNEO, your gateway to the wild waterways of Santubong. Here, your boat awaits to take you beyond the riverbanks and into a world where mangrove forests, winding estuaries and the open sea meet.
Step aboard, feel the refreshing coastal breeze and get ready for an unforgettable journey into the heart of Sarawak’s wetlands. Hold on to your sense of adventure as you cruise along Santubong’s winding river channels and explore its thriving mangrove wilderness. Towering mangrove roots stretch into the muddy banks, while tangled branches provide shelter for a remarkable variety of wildlife.
Keep your camera ready and your eyes peeled as your boat navigates the waterways in search of the iconic Proboscis Monkey, a unique primate found only on the island of Borneo. Look along the riverbanks and treetops for these distinctive monkeys, recognisable by their prominent noses, reddish-brown coats and long tails. You may also encounter long-tailed macaques leaping between branches, birds hunting along the water’s edge and mudskippers moving across the muddy mangrove flats.
The adventure continues toward the river mouth and the coastal waters of the South China Sea. Here, the landscape opens up, revealing a spectacular meeting point between the river and the sea. Scan the water carefully for the elusive Irrawaddy Dolphin, a fascinating marine mammal known for its rounded forehead and gentle appearance. Spotting one surfacing nearby is a memorable highlight, although sightings depend on weather, tides and the dolphins’ natural movements.
As you venture through this ever-changing landscape, your guide will share insights into the intricate mangrove ecosystem and the wildlife that depends on it. You may also spot saltwater crocodiles resting along the riverbanks, so keep a respectful distance and follow your guide’s instructions. Throughout the expedition, admire the dramatic silhouette of Mount Santubong rising above the surrounding forests, creating an unforgettable backdrop for your wildlife adventure.
Every bend in the river brings a new possibility — an unexpected wildlife encounter, a bird taking flight or ripples on the water that hint at something moving beneath the surface. After an exhilarating exploration of Santubong’s mangroves and coastal waterways, return to the jetty at Orcaella by AJ BORNEO. Disembark and enjoy the drive back to Kuching, arriving at your hotel at approximately 3:00 PM.
From the enchanting rainforest home of the orangutans to the winding mangrove channels where proboscis monkeys and Irrawaddy dolphins may be found, this experience brings together two extraordinary sides of Sarawak’s natural heritage.
