TOUR ITINERARY

Duration 4 Days 3 Nights | Difficulty Level : Moderate

Day 1: Sandakan – Sepilok – Kinabatangan River

Begin your adventure with a visit to the renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where you’ll observe rescued orangutans being nurtured and prepared for life back in the wild. Continue to the nearby Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about the conservation of the world’s smallest bear species. After the visits, enjoy lunch at a nearby café before continuing your journey.

Next, explore the Rainforest Discovery Centre, where you can stroll along canopy walkways and immerse yourself in the rich biodiversity of Borneo’s tropical rainforest. In the afternoon, depart for the scenic overland journey to the Kinabatangan River (approximately 2 hours’ drive), passing through rural landscapes and plantations along the way. Once arrive, settle down in your designated accommodation, freshen up & rest.

After dinner, set out on an exciting night cruise along the Kinabatangan River. The day will conclude with experience the rainforest after dark as you search for nocturnal wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, civets, owls, and perhaps even crocodiles.

Day 2: Kinabatangan River – Wildlife & Cultural Immersion

Start your day early with a refreshing morning river cruise along the Kinabatangan River (approximately 1 hour 40 minutes). As the rainforest awakens, keep an eye out for wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, hornbills, pygmy elephants, and other riverine species in their natural habitat.

Return to the lodge for a satisfying breakfast, followed by a guided jungle walk (1.5 hours). Venture into the lush rainforest trails and gain insight into the region’s unique flora and fauna while learning survival tips and ecological facts from your guide.

After the walk, enjoy a well-deserved lunch at the lodge followed by a visit to the gallery of the “Orang Sungai” (River People) to discover their rich cultural heritage, traditional lifestyle, and handcrafted items, offering a deeper understanding of the local community living along the river.

Take a relaxing tea break before heading out again for an afternoon river cruise (1.5–2 hours). This is another excellent opportunity to spot wildlife, as animals are often more active during the cooler hours of the day.

Return to the lodge for dinner. In the evening, embark on a guided night walk & insect observation (1–1.5 hours). Experience the rainforest from a different perspective as you search for fascinating nocturnal creatures, including insects, frogs, and other small wildlife that thrive after dark.

Day 3: Kinabatangan River – Gomantong Cave Exploration

Begin the day with another peaceful morning river cruise along the Kinabatangan River (approximately 1 hour 40 minutes). Take in the serene atmosphere of the rainforest at dawn while keeping watch for more wildlife sightings along the riverbanks. Return to the lodge for breakfast, followed by some time at leisure—perfect for relaxing, enjoying the natural surroundings, or simply unwinding by the riverside.

Enjoy lunch at the lodge before heading out for an afternoon excursion. Later, visit the impressive Gomantong Caves, one of Sabah’s most important cave systems known for its  big chambers and unique ecosystem. Explore the cave boardwalks while learning about the traditional bird’s nest harvesting practices. If weather conditions are favorable, witness the spectacular bat exodus, where thousands of bats spiral out of the cave at dusk—a truly unforgettable natural phenomenon.

Return to the lodge for dinner. In the evening, embark on another guided night walk & insect observation (1–1.5 hours). Discover the hidden nocturnal world of the rainforest, from fascinating insects to other elusive creatures that emerge after dark.

Day 4: Kinabatangan – Departure

For those who wish to enjoy one final wildlife experience, an optional morning river cruise along the Kinabatangan River (approximately 1.5 hours) is available at RM65.00 per person (subject to weather & availability). This last optional cruise offers another opportunity to spot wildlife in the tranquil early morning setting of the rainforest.

Return to the lodge for breakfast, followed by check-out. Afterward, transfer and drop-off to Sandakan town or Airport or the nearby main town area, marking the end of your memorable Sandakan wildlife adventure.
