TOUR ITINERARY

Duration 4 Days 3 Nights | Difficulty Level : Moderate

Day 1: Sandakan – Sepilok – Rainforest Resort

Depart from your hotel in Sandakan or meet upon arrival at Sandakan Airport around 8:00am. Begin your journey with a visit to the world-renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Witness the morning feeding of these iconic primates and enjoy the rare opportunity to photograph them in a natural forest setting. Established in 1964, the centre rehabilitates orangutans that have been orphaned or displaced by logging and land clearing. Set within a magnificent mixed dipterocarp forest, the sanctuary helps the orangutans gradually regain their independence, relying less on the twice-daily feedings of milk and bananas before eventually returning to the wild.

Continue on to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, home to the world’s smallest bear species. Here, you can observe these charming but vulnerable animals in their natural forest environment. Habitat loss due to deforestation has placed sun bears under serious threat, and the centre is dedicated to their welfare, rehabilitation, conservation, education, and research. From the elevated boardwalk, visitors can watch the bears roam, forage, and play in spacious outdoor forest enclosures. Enjoy lunch and check in at Borneo Sepilok Rainforest Resort.

After lunch, visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), developed by the Sabah Forestry Department to introduce visitors to the wonders and importance of Borneo’s rainforest. The RDC is also one of Sabah’s prime bird-watching locations. Explore the forest trails or walk along the 150-meter canopy walkway, 28 meters above the ground, where breathtaking views of the lush rainforest await. Return to the resort in the late afternoon and overnight at Sepilok Jungle Resort or B&B.

Day 2: Proboscis Monkey – Sukau Resort  – Kinabatangan 

08:00 hrs – Breakfast at Your Hotel
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the hotel. The morning is free and easy at your own leisure.

12:00 hrs – Lunch (Own Expense)
Lunch on your own at the hotel or nearby eateries.

13:00 hrs – Transfer to Kinabatangan River
Check out and depart for the Kinabatangan River, a comfortable two-hour drive through rural landscapes.

(Applicable to both options)

15:30 hrs – Arrival at Sukau Riverside Lodge
Arrive at Lodge, where a short briefing will be conducted before check-in.

16:00 hrs – Afternoon Tea
Relax and enjoy a light tea break while soaking in the peaceful surroundings of the river lodge.

16:20 hrs – Afternoon River Cruise (1.5–2 Hours)
Gather at the jetty for an afternoon river cruise, one of the highlights of the experience. Cruise along the Kinabatangan River in search of wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, orangutans, hornbills, crocodiles, and other riverine species.

19:00 hrs – Dinner at the Lodge

Return to the lodge for a freshly prepared dinner.

20:00 hrs – Night River Cruise (1 Hour)
Embark on an exciting night cruise, offering a chance to spot nocturnal wildlife under the stars and experience the river’s unique nighttime atmosphere.

Day 3: Kinabatangan River Adventure 

06:00 hrs – Morning River Cruise (1 hr 40 mins)
Begin your day with a serene early-morning river cruise, the best time to spot wildlife along the riverbanks. Watch for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, macaques, and other animals as the rainforest awakens.

08:00 hrs – Breakfast at the Lodge
Return to the lodge and enjoy a hearty breakfast surrounded by the sounds of nature.

09:30 hrs – Guided Jungle Walk (1.5 hrs)
Set off on a guided jungle walk to explore the rich flora and fauna of the Kinabatangan rainforest. Learn about medicinal plants, towering trees, and the smaller creatures that inhabit the forest floor.

12:30 hrs – Lunch at the Lodge
Enjoy lunch at the lodge before continuing with the afternoon activities.

14:30 hrs – Visit to “The Orang Sungai” Gallery
Discover the fascinating culture of the Orang Sungai (River People) through a visit to the local gallery. Learn about their daily life, traditions, and traditional crafts that have been passed down through generations.

16:00 hrs – Afternoon Tea
Relax with a light tea break while enjoying views of the surrounding rainforest.

16:20 hrs – Afternoon River Cruise (1.5–2 hrs)
Head back to the river for another wildlife-rich afternoon cruise, offering excellent opportunities to spot animals as they become active later in the day.

19:00 hrs – Dinner at the Lodge
Return to the lodge for a delicious dinner.

20:00 hrs – Night Walk (1–1.5 hrs)
End the day with a guided night walk, searching for frogs, nocturnal birds, insects, and other nighttime creatures while experiencing the rainforest after dark.

Day 4: Return to Sandakan 

Rise early for another refreshing morning cruise along the Kinabatangan River to observe more of the region’s abundant wildlife and birdlife. After the cruise, return to the resort for breakfast.

Following breakfast, check out and begin your return journey to Sandakan. You will be dropped off at your hotel in Sandakan or at Sandakan Airport for your onward flight.
