Description

TOUR ITINERARY

Duration 2 Days 1 Night| Difficulty Level : Easy

The Berau region of East Kalimantan, Indonesia, is a treasure of biodiversity on the mainland of Borneo, facing the coastal paradise of the Derawan Archipelago famous for the Bajau tribe of Derawan Island, Kakaban’s jellyfish lake, Sangalaki’s turtle beach, and Maratua’s palm-fringed white sands.

Berau’s vast, little-explored jungles of mountains, valleys, and pristine rainforest form one of the largest untouched wilderness areas in East Kalimantan. It is also home to the largest wild orangutan population in Borneo. With the growth of eco-tourism in the Derawan Islands, Berau has designated several areas as protected rainforest zones and wildlife corridors, ensuring both conservation and sustainable tourism.

Beyond its natural wonders, Berau is rich in cultural heritage. The Dayak tribes live in traditional longhouses, practicing hunting, fishing, dry farming, and gathering honey, gaharu resin, and bird nests as part of their daily jungle life. Access to these remote areas is mainly through the fast-flowing rivers, which serve as the only natural highways connecting villages to the outside world.

The Berau Orangutan Jungle & Dayak Culture Expeditions are designed for adventurous travelers eager to go beyond the guidebooks and explore off-the-beaten-track trails. These journeys combine wildlife encounters with authentic cultural experiences, offering a rare glimpse into the hidden tropical treasures of Borneo’s rainforest.

Day 01: Berau – Merasa (D)

Arrive at Berau Airport, where you’ll meet your guide for a short briefing. Transfer by car or minibus (approx. 2 hours) to Merasa Dayak Village on the Lesan River. Explore the village and its traditional culture before enjoying dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at Merasa Guesthouse.

Day 02: Merasa Orangutan Jungle Trek – Benuaq Baru Dayak Village – Berau (B, L)

After a simple breakfast at your guesthouse, set out by kayak upstream along the Lesan River (approx. 2 hours). The journey reveals lush riverbanks lined with towering dipterocarp trees, marking the entrance to the dense Borneo jungle. Along the way, you may spot otters, monkeys, and bird species.

Visit Pulau Bawan, known as Orangutan Island, then continue with a short jungle trek (conditions permitting) to see a waterfall, ancient Dayak graves, and limestone caves.

Return by canoe to Merasa, then transfer by car (approx. 1 hour) to Benuaq Baru Dayak Kayan Village. Here, admire the extraordinary longhouse culture, with its vibrant carvings, geometric motifs, and wooden statues depicting jungle wildlife. Witness the traditions of tattooed and long-eared Dayak women, a living cultural heritage in a rapidly modernizing Kalimantan.

Continue by car back to Berau, with lunch en route at a local restaurant. The tour concludes with a transfer to the airport, hotel, or harbor for your onward journey (around 2:00 pm).
