Description
TOUR ITINERARY
Duration 5 Days 4 Nights | Difficulty Level : Moderate
Day 1 – Sandakan to Kinabatangan River (D)
Between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm, you will be picked up from Sandakan hotels, Sandakan Airport, or the Sepilok area and begin your journey to the Kinabatangan River, Sabah’s premier wildlife corridor. As the transfer takes approximately 2 to 3.5 hours, guests are advised to have lunch beforehand or bring along light snacks for the journey.
Upon arrival at your riverside lodge, check in and settle into your surroundings. In the late afternoon, head out on your first river cruise, gliding along the calm waters of the Kinabatangan. Before departure, enjoy tea, coffee, and light snacks at the lodge restaurant while taking in scenic river views.
During the cruise, your experienced guide will help spot wildlife along the riverbanks, including proboscis monkeys, orangutans, silver leaf monkeys, long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques, as well as a variety of birds and, with luck, saltwater crocodiles. The cruise lasts approximately two hours, offering excellent wildlife viewing and photography opportunities.
After returning to the lodge, enjoy dinner, followed by an included guided night walk, where you’ll explore the lodge surroundings in search of nocturnal creatures.
Day 2 – Kinabatangan River Wildlife Exploration (B/L/D)
Rise early for your second river cruise at sunrise, one of the best times to observe wildlife as the river awakens. Watch for birdlife such as hornbills, along with various primate species moving through the treetops.
Return to the lodge for breakfast, then join your guide for a guided forest walk. Learn to identify animal tracks and orangutan nests, and with some luck, you may even encounter orangutans in the wild.
Enjoy lunch overlooking the river, followed by some free time to relax before heading out again in the afternoon for another river cruise, offering further chances to spot the region’s unique fauna.
After dinner, head out for an evening activity. You may choose an included guided night walk, or opt for a night river cruise to search for nocturnal wildlife along the riverbanks.
- Optional night cruise: RM100 per person.
Day 3 – Kinabatangan to Danum Valley Field Centre (B/D)
After breakfast, check out from your Kinabatangan lodge and begin your journey to the Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC), travelling deeper into one of Borneo’s most pristine and untouched rainforest regions.
Upon arrival, check in and take some time to settle in before heading out on an introductory guided rainforest walk. This first immersion into Danum Valley’s ancient lowland dipterocarp forest reveals towering trees, dense vegetation, and exceptional biodiversity, offering insight into one of Southeast Asia’s most important conservation areas.
Return to the field centre in the evening for dinner, then prepare for another adventure after dark. Join a guided night walk or night drive, an excellent opportunity to spot nocturnal wildlife such as civets, flying squirrels, frogs, insects, and other elusive rainforest species.
Day 4 – Danum Valley Exploration (B/L/D)
Wake early for a morning nature walk around DVFC and experience the forest as it comes alive with the calls of birds, gibbons, and other wildlife. Alternatively, you may pre-arrange a 4×4 drive to Bukit Atur for a spectacular sunrise view above the forest canopy (advance booking required—please inform your guide).
Return to the Field Centre for breakfast, after which you may choose to explore another nearby forest trail. The late morning is free for rest and relaxation before lunch.
In the afternoon, enjoy a refreshing dip in the Ulu Segama River, followed by another guided rainforest trek, offering further opportunities to learn about the forest ecosystem. Return to the centre in the late afternoon and relax as the sky changes colour at sunset.
After dinner, join an included night walk, or opt for an additional 4×4 night drive to search for more nocturnal wildlife.
Day 5 – Danum Valley to Lahad Datu (B)
Wake early for a final morning walk, maximizing your chances of wildlife sightings as the forest becomes active at dawn. Return to the Field Centre for breakfast, then enjoy free time until check-out at 9:30 am.
You will be transferred to Lahad Datu, with an estimated arrival time of 12:00 pm, in time for your onward travel.
