Day 1: Sandakan – Sepilok – Rainforest Resort

Depart from your hotel in Sandakan or meet upon arrival at Sandakan Airport. Begin your journey with a visit to the world-renowned Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Witness the morning feeding of these iconic primates and enjoy the rare opportunity to photograph them in a natural forest setting. Established in 1964, the centre rehabilitates orangutans that have been orphaned or displaced by logging and land clearing. Set within a magnificent mixed dipterocarp forest, the sanctuary helps the orangutans gradually regain their independence, relying less on the twice-daily feedings of milk and bananas before eventually returning to the wild.

Continue on to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, home to the world’s smallest bear species. Here, you can observe these charming but vulnerable animals in their natural forest environment. Habitat loss due to deforestation has placed sun bears under serious threat, and the centre is dedicated to their welfare, rehabilitation, conservation, education, and research. From the elevated boardwalk, visitors can watch the bears roam, forage, and play in spacious outdoor forest enclosures. Enjoy lunch and check in at Borneo Sepilok Rainforest Resort.

After lunch, visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), developed by the Sabah Forestry Department to introduce visitors to the wonders and importance of Borneo’s rainforest. The RDC is also one of Sabah’s prime bird-watching locations. Explore the forest trails or walk along the 150-meter canopy walkway, 28 meters above the ground, where breathtaking views of the lush rainforest await. Return to the resort in the late afternoon and overnight.

Day 2: Gomantong Cave – Sukau Bilit Resort  – Kinabatangan

Morning
Enjoy breakfast at the resort while taking in the serene views of the surrounding nature. At 9:00 AM, depart from the resort and continue your journey to the Gomantong Caves, the largest limestone and bird’s nest cave system in Sabah. Home to millions of bats and swiftlets, the caves are an impressive natural wonder. During harvesting season, you may even witness local collectors gathering edible bird’s nests using traditional methods.

After exploring the caves, proceed to Bilit along the Kinabatangan River and onward to Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by the resort team with refreshments, followed by a briefing on the resort, surrounding trails, and safety guidelines. Lunch will be served, after which you may check in to your room.

Afternoon
At 4:00 PM, embark on a river cruise along the Kinabatangan River in search of the region’s abundant wildlife. Keep an eye out for proboscis monkeys, orangutans, macaques, pygmy elephants, a variety of birds, and other fascinating creatures that call this area home.

Return to the resort after the cruise. Dinner will be served in the evening, followed by an overnight stay at Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort.

Day 3: Kinabatangan River Adventure 

Wake up to the enchanting calls of gibbons and hornbills echoing through the forest. Begin your day with an early morning river cruise to spot even more wildlife and birdlife at their most active hour. Return to the resort for breakfast.

After your meal, venture into the jungle within the resort area for a guided walk, offering another opportunity to explore the rich flora and fauna of the region. Return to the resort for lunch and some time to relax.

In the late afternoon, set off on another river cruise to discover additional wildlife and bird species along the Kinabatangan. After the excursion, return to the resort for dinner. Overnight at Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort.

Day 4: Back to Sandakan 

Rise early for another refreshing morning cruise along the Kinabatangan River to observe more of the region’s abundant wildlife and birdlife. After the cruise, return to the resort for breakfast.

Following breakfast, check out and begin your return journey to Sandakan. You will be dropped off at your hotel in Sandakan or at Sandakan Airport for your onward flight.
