Day 1: Kuching – Batang Ai – Headhunters’ Village (L/D)

You will be picked up from your hotel at 9:30 a.m. and driven to Batang Ai Reservoir. Along the way, the journey will stop at Lachau Bazaar at around 11:00 a.m., where you can stroll through the local shops and small native market, followed by an early lunch at a local coffee shop.

After lunch, the journey continues, arriving at Batang Ai Lake between 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. From Pangkalan Batang Ai, you will depart by longboat for a scenic 90-minute boat ride to one of the oldest headhunters’ villages in the area.

Upon arrival, settle into your chosen accommodation and freshen up. A short tea break will be served, followed by a briefing on village activities.

Dinner featuring traditional ethnic cuisine will be served at 7:30 p.m. At 8:30 p.m., you will visit the longhouse to spend time with the headhunters, learning about their culture, customs, and stories. You will also be offered Tuak, the local rice wine.

At 10:00 p.m., prepare for rest and leisure, getting ready for the next day’s adventure.

Day 2: Jungle Trek, Waterfall & Cultural Activities (B/L/D)

Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. After breakfast, you will take a short boat ride to the starting point of the jungle trail. Enjoy a guided hike along the river while searching for orangutans and monkeys—this is one of the few places in Sarawak where wild orangutans can still be found.

The journey continues upriver by longboat to the scenic Wong Ensulai Waterfall. Along the way, if water conditions permit, the boatman will demonstrate traditional Iban fishing using a net (Jala), and the catch may be used for your BBQ lunch.

Upon arrival at the waterfall, enjoy time to relax, swim, and take in the beautiful surroundings. A picnic lunch will be prepared, featuring chicken cooked in bamboo (pansuh), BBQ fish, local vegetables, and other traditional dishes. Enjoy your meal by the riverbank while soaking in the peaceful rainforest atmosphere.

You will return to the lodge at around 3:00 p.m. After a short rest, visit Nanga Sumpa Longhouse again and relax on the ruai (communal verandah). A blowpipe demonstration will be conducted, and you may try your hand at scoring a shot. Spend time with the Iban children and create meaningful memories.

Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. A short night walk with an experienced local guide is available upon request. Please ensure you wear proper footwear suitable for muddy and wet trails.

Day 3: Batang Ai – Kuching (B/L)

Breakfast will be served at the lodge at 7:30 a.m., followed by a self guided short walk around the village. Experience the morning chores. At 9:00 a.m., you will depart from the village to Batang Ai jetty. Enjoy the last boat ride and look around the forest. Sometimes Wild Orangutans and Hornbills are seen early in the morning.

The overland journey back to Kuching begins at around 10:30 a.m., with a stop in Serian for refueling and lunch at a local restaurant. The estimated arrival time in the city is around 3:00 p.m.

TRIP NOTES:

We highly recommend that guest(s) leave their big luggage in Kuching and bring a smaller bag for the journey to Batang Ai. There is limited space on the boats for large suitcases or bags,  bring only what guest(s) need for the three-day journey.
